Mondraker goes all-in on drop bars with their first-ever gravel bike – the all-new carbon Arid. Created by a progressive mountain bike company, the new Mondraker Arid is still designed to go fast. But instead of pigeonholing it into one small niche, Mondraker built a versatile gravel all-rounder that is as happy to go racing as it is to spend a chill week bikepacking.

It also happens to be the first-ever Mondraker to get internal frame storage. Maybe that’s something we’ll see come to mountain bikes soon, too?

“Get out of the saddle. Pedal as hard as you can. Don’t look back. This thing is fast, we know. Let your instincts kick in and…. Boom! You’ve unlocked all that potential. As easy as. The new Mondraker Arid is the perfect ride whatever your idea of gravel. We’ve created something that moves, something truly authentic. Our way.”

If the silhouette of the new Mondraker Arid looks a bit familiar, that might be because last year Mondraker already debuted their first dropbar model, which curiously was the Dusty gravel ebike with a stealthy, almost-entirely-hidden Mahle ebike drive system. But while that gravel ebike might have been perfect for the Mondraker eMTB fans, this new Arid is for the Mondraker fans who want to push themselves fast and further after the pavement ends.

One thing that I noticed was missing from the Dusty was Mondraker’s signature pierced headtube. But now, the Arid brings it back, well it brings it to the back. The new Mondraker Arid features a unique cutout window at the top of its seatstays, where it can provide a bit of vertical flex, while maintaining overall frame stiffness for solid handling.

Gravel geometry designed by mountain bikers

all-new Mondraker Arid carbon gravel bike, riding like a mountain bike

Mondraker describes the Arid’s gravel bike geometry as “innovative”, clearly inspired by their progressive mountain bike Forward Geometry. It features “generous reach figures and stem lengths of between 60mm and 90mm depending on frame size, a 70° head angle, and 425mm chainstays“.

The result is a fit and feel meant to provide ample rider comfort, and still be “confidence-inspiring” when the terrain gets spicy.

The quick gist is that Old Man Mountain & Silca have teamed up to support a collective of 5 amateur bikepacking racers from any background and anywhere around the world. Each member will get a $2000 stipend to help cover costs to get them to the races. Then, on top of that will be a whole bunch of free Old Man Mountain gear, prototypes to test, a full suite of Silca goodies to make your bike faster, more free gear & industry deals, plus help figuring out a training plan for your individual racing goals.

Call it a mix between the birth of a factory bikepacking race team and a call out for ultra-distance influencers.

Any way you look at it, OMM (they abbreviate their own name like that, and I’ve already grown tired of typing Old Man Mountain) was looking for a way they could support some of the cyclists on the bikepacking & ultra racing scene. And at the same time grow their visibility amongst more competitive bike riders, while testing and refining their next crop of products still in development.

Loam & Gravel Society Experimental Bikepacking Team, founded and supported by Old Man Mountain & Silca, loaded gravel bike

My personal take on it is then. It seems like OMM are strongly hinting that they are also working on more race-oriented gear-hauling products. The majority of the current offerings (and their existing crop of brand ambassadors) lean more toward the heavy-duty, utilitarian way of carrying gear on your bikes, or classic loaded touring just off-road; think: burly racks & baskets. But OMM also already created some interesting things like their Axle Packs. Those provide a great way to mount gear on bikes not normally well-suited for bikepacking – like lightweight race bikes.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of that show up on bikes of the new Loam & Gravel Society experimental bikepacking team.

“We commit to nurturing a lively and inclusive cycling community by focusing on shared experiences and collective joy. We see bikepacking and ultra racing as a means to connect, explore, and grow together while also pushing ourselves further. Our team represents the heart of camaraderie and adventure, engaging in races, community events, supporting fellow riders, and celebrating the journey itself. We want to push what we can do on a bike and through our collaborative spirit, we hope to inspire others to embrace adventure and find joy in every mile. Go beyond the podium.”

Nuts & Bolts

OK, so 5 riders will get picked, get 2 grand & a bunch of gear, and will help test some next-gen prototypes, too.

OMM is looking for riders of any age, gender, or background who want to test their own limits at some of the most grueling bikepacking races out there. “Winning isn’t everything, but effort matters.” But they will be prioritizing racers that mix determination, self-sufficiency, speed, and good communication skills.

Applications are open starting today through December 2nd. Fill out the online form at: OldManMountain.com here, now.

BTW, if you work for another bikepacking or endurance-adjacent brand and the experimental bikepacking team concept sounds interesting to you, OMM’s Loam & Gravel Society is still hunting for additional sponsor support. If OMM can round up more backing, their goal is then to bring all 5 riders together for a week this winter for a training camp where everyone can get to know each other and support one another’s racing goals.

Shimano Gives Existing EP801 eMTB Riders a Race Mode Upgrade Over-The-Air https://bikerumor.com/shimano-gives-existing-ep801-emtb-riders-a-race-mode-upgrade-over-the-air/ https://bikerumor.com/shimano-gives-existing-ep801-emtb-riders-a-race-mode-upgrade-over-the-air/#comments Mon, 18 Nov 2024 21:41:49 +0000 https://bikerumor.com/?p=372841 Shimano EP801 ebikes get free Race Mode tune upgrade with extended overrun & more customization via over-the-air update through the E-Tube app...

Yes, if you already have a recent ebike powered by the top Shimano EP801 motor, you can now get the latest Race Mode tune over-the-air by simply updating your firmware in their E-Tube app. Faster ramp up to the max 400% assist. Customizable assist cutoff feel at the max speed. And most importantly, extended overrun for Uninterrupted Power Delivery as you momentarily stop pedaling through the roughest terrain.

Fine-tuned on the pro e-enduro circuit, now the Shimano eMTB Race Mode upgrade is as easy as connecting your smartphone to your ebike…

Shimano EP801 ebike Race Mode over-the-air upgrade

(Photo/Propain)

The Race Mode firmware tune isn’t entirely new. We already knew about it this past summer. It promised “exciting new features and more customization options to help you boost your race speeds and keep the momentum rolling longer through techy terrain“.

And if you already had an EP801-equipped ebike at the end of June, you could have taken it into your local bikeshop to have them update the firmware. But let’s be honest, how many of you actually did that? How many people take their already functional bikes into the shop for service in the middle of the riding season, even if there was a promise of some incremental performance improvement?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

(Photo/Propain)

But now you can upgrade your own ebike from the comfort of your own home. I just updated the E-Tube Project Cyclist app on my phone (just for clarification, it’s simply called E-Tube on my iPhone) and updated my own firmware in about 15 minutes. It probably took longer because I had a terrible WiFi signal in my garage.

But that’s it. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Can I just say that one of my favorite things about electronics (when they work like I want) is free over-the-air updates that give me new or improved functionality!

What’s actually new?

Next-gen Shimano eMTB ebikes transformed with AutoShift FreeShift automatic shifting, powered by LinkGlide, EP-801 & 11sp XT Di2, photo by Dan Milner, loose descent

Higher Boost Mode assist level.

Peak power is still 600W, max torque is still 85Nm, and max assist is still 400%. But the race mode tune means a steeper curve to get to those peak levels, so you get the maximum power out of the motor much faster in the tuned Boost mode.

Adjustable max speed cutoff progression.

Normally, Shimano smoothly transitions their motor’s pedal assist power off as it approaches its max speed limit (25km/h for my ebikes in Europe). But that means you sacrifice a little power at the end to gain a natural and comfortable feel. But now, if you want, you can set the motor to go full gas to the limit to eke out extra seconds of max power, and deal with an abrupt drop in power as you hit the speed limiter. Your choice – Natural, Middle, or Aggressive in each assist mode. I would prefer natural, but many will like the middle mode, too.

Extended pedal-assist carry-over or overrun.

This one is the biggest deal. Just like Bosch’s CX Race motor has extended overrun, now Shimano EP801 riders get some extra customizable power after they stop pedaling for a second. Pick from 3 levels Short (the same as before), Middle & Long applied to all assist modes. Long seems to be nearly comparable to the Bosch version, giving about a second of extended assist power.

Interestingly, backpedaling on the Shimano motor cancels its ‘carry-over’ or overrun, which had existed to a minor degree in Boost mode already since EP801’s debut. But while that originally kept you from being able to ratchet the pedals through really rough sections, now these longer overruns are not so easily canceled by backpedaling, giving it much more usability, and making it a better head-to-head competitor with Bosch CX Race.

There’s also the same AutoShift updates that we previewed back in the summer, again developed with Yeti-Shimano EP Racing’s Mick Hannah to give the latest EP801 eMTBs more of a race-tuned feel.

The new firmware is available to all EP801 bike owners and is now free to apply using Shimano’s E-TUBE Project Cyclist smartphone app (Version 5.3.2).” The over-the-air update is available through the E-Tube app on either iOS or Android, giving ebike riders more control over their eMTB and more of a racing feel to their ebike riding.

Another quick update from Berlin bikemaker Standert… their affordable aluminum Kreissäge road racing bike gets updated with the same modern integration as its Scandium Rally Sport sibling, but now with even more affordable builds. The Kreissäge concept was always to create more accessible race bikes. And while the made-in-Italy frameset’s prices have crept up over the past 5 years, Standert has actually managed to bring down the entry-level cost of complete electronic-shift builds by several hundred euros, making their race-ready more accessible than ever…

(Photos/Standert)

When we first found Standert’s alloy road bike named after a circular saw five years ago, that 2nd generation Kreissäge Disc had just been upgraded to Italian Scandium for more of a race-ready feel. But it was only a year and a half later that Standert chose to differentiate the core aluminum all-rounder road bike from a more race-focused rally sport version in lighter Scandium alloy, then newly named the Kreissäge RS. And while we’d already seen a lighter, more integrated v2 RS, the regular aluminum bike chugged along at a lower price with a bit simplified details.

But now the core Kreissäge gets its own sleek integrated update, in two simple new Yin & Yang black & white liveries.

2024 Standert Kreissäge affordable integrated aluminum alloy road bike in Black & White, roiding

And while this isn’t their lightest, most advanced road bike, the updated Standert Kreissäge is still built to go fast, sharing the exact same race-ready geometry as the Kreissäge RS, just 120g heavier.

And yes, prices for pretty much everything keep climbing. A new MY24 Standert Kreissäge frameset is 200€ more than it was 5 years ago, or 100€ more than the most recent iteration sold earlier this year. But one bright spot of the expansion of electronic groupsets, is that you can now buy a complete modern Kreissäge with a wireless SRAM Force AXS group for around 400-600€ less than you could 5 years ago. That’s something.

(Sure, more affordable mechanical shift builds are now out the window, unfortunately. But such appears to be the unstoppable force of progress.)

What’s new?

updated affordable aluminum Standert Kreissage integrated alloy road bike in B&W, internal cable routing

The most obvious change, of course, is new routing. Now routed through the upper headset cup instead of ports in the downtube, the aluminum Kreissäge already had a straight oversized 56mm headtube, so it’s really the disappearance of cables that stands out.

updated affordable aluminum Standert Kreissage integrated alloy road bike in B&W, UDH hanger

But out back there’s an equally important upgrade with all-new dropouts, too. The new Standert Kreissäge switches to the future-proof UDH standard with a cast dropout that smoothly transitions from the tapered chainstay.

With external cables gone, the new frame is no longer compatible with any mechanical shifting setups. And Standert no longer offers a rim brake version with the Kreissäge’s new update. (Your only rim brake hopes are catching a previous version before they go out of stock, or one of their last demo bikes.)

The newly updated affordable alloy Standert Kreissäge frame is welded by hand in Italy from lightweight Dedacciai Aegis aluminum tubing and is now incrementally about 45g heavier than the previous generation, but with a 10g lighter carbon fork.

“Victory is more than a destination; it’s an equation that combines perseverance, sacrifice, commitment, courage, and a touch of luck. Tadej has shown us that true champions don’t just win—they inspire and redefine the limits of possibility.”

MET talks about Pogačar inspiring a new generation of cyclists and cycling fans as the embodiment of a new “Golden Era” of professional road cycling. So they’ve created a couple of special edition helmets. And they’ve given them an extra caron – the strešica or little roof accent – to remind us all to pronounce the Slovenian cyclist’s name with a ch sound.

Black becomes Blačk, “symbolizing elegance and authority“, and is accented with gold in reference to an astonishing number of big 2024 victories.

Pinarello x Zwift Dogma F limited edition carbon road bike

“Only 50 DOGMA F framesets have been ‘Designed in Watopia’, utilizing Zwift’s bold and playful brand colors, each one adopting Pinarello’s popular ‘cut’ paint scheme. This will be a special collector’s item for Pinarello and Zwift fans worldwide.”

What’s new, recently?

Debuted just this summer, the latest Pinarello Dogma F is one of the fastest road bikes in the pro peloton. This new Dogma F is lighter than ever, but also Pinarello’s most aerodynamic all-rounder.

The asymmetric carbon road bike with a nose features a narrower headtube flowing into a reduced-thickness downtube, then a 3.5º-canted “Aero-Keel” bottom bracket shell. Inside the lower volume headtube, there’s a new proprietary headset and newly oval steerer tube on the Onda fork – narrowed front-to-back to allow for sleekly integrated, full internal cable routing. That also created a more compliant ride, while maintaining top-tier handling stiffness.

Tech details

Pinarello Dogma F
  • 30mm tire clearance
  • integrated headset cable routing
  • shorter 12mm thru-axles with aero closed ends & aero derailleur hanger
  • new 7° flare Talon Fast integrated cockpit, then with 4° or 7° ergonomic inward bend, depending on size
  • 108g weight savings vs. previous ~865g Dogma F. 6.63-6.88kg claimed complete bike weights (53cm without pedals)

If you are hunting for the perfect enduro bike just for you, the revamped & expanded YT Capra Core family offers more choices and more opportunities than ever to fine-tune the exact setup you want. YT calls it the return of the GOAT.

Carbon or alloy frames. 29″ or a mullet wheel combo. SRAM or Shimano. Fox, RockShox, Öhlins, or Marzocchi.

It’s your call from just $2500€ up to $6000€ – enduro bikes for almost every budget.

More choice with updated YT Capra Core enduro family

First debuted back in 2021 with their return of the Goat Man, the 3rd generation YT Capra is the consumer-direct brand’s go-to longer travel bike for full-on enduro racing. Instead of just popping a flip-chip there are separate MX mullet and 29er frames with their own specific suspension kinematics and geometries. Both get 170mm forks, but the MX matches with 170mm of 4-bar rear wheel travel while the full-29er dials it back to 165mm out back.

Tech details

  • ultra hi-mod carbon, hi-mod carbon, and alloy frameset options
  • MX mullet 27.5/29″ (170mm) or 29 specific (165mm) frames
  • 5 frame sizes (S-XXL)

2025 Lapierre Pulsium carbon endurance road bike, riding

Lapierre’s endurance road Pulsium started out as a Classics bike designed for Roubaix & Flanders cobbles, before evolving for more comfort. But in 2025 the 4th generation carbon Lapierre Pulsium is ready to get back to racing as a lighter and more aerodynamic road bike with race-tuned geometry. While at the same time, still managing to deliver even better rider comfort to take on the longest days in the saddle.

Lapierre says they can deliver both comfort AND performance, perfect for riders taking on their first gran fondo and for racers tackling longest ultra-distance events. Oh, and 100g lighter than before, while maintaining affordability!

It’s been more than a decade since the first Pulsium debuted the elastomer-damped SAT suspension concept on the road. We caught up with FDJ on their further refined 2nd gen bikes at Paris Roubaix in 2017, before Lapierre dialed back the race-readiness with a more amateur-focused 3rd generation.

But now Lapierre takes the Pulsium back to its racing roots.

What’s new?

2025 Lapierre Pulsium carbon endurance road bike, seatstays

100g lighter. 5% more aero. 5.5% more vibration damping.

2025 Lapierre Pulsium carbon endurance road bike, damping

Lapierre now updates their endurance bike with the lighter 3D Tubular design from their race bikes, bypassing seatstays around the seattube to better isolate the rider from low-frequency (50Hz) vibration vs. the heavier SAT elastomer solution.

Plus, the combination of flexstays, 3D Tubular construction, and a round 27.2mm seatpost create an all-around more supple feel at the saddle, at both low & high riding speeds.

More aero, too!

Of course, aerodynamic optimization is everywhere these days. And endurance road means longer times out, riding solo in the wind, even if at lower than pro racing speeds. So, Lapierre tweaked the new Pulsium to make it faster where they could.

“Aero isn’t always everything, but it’s a performance factor that our engineers couldn’t neglect or set aside.”

The 2025 Pulsium inherits aero headtube and fork leg shaping from the recent Xelius DRS to smooth airflow over the front of the new endurance road bike. Lapierre says it makes this new bike “5% more aero” vs. the 2021 Pulsium. And that means a 6.1W savings at 50kph, or in real terms 4 seconds saved every 10km. Or still 2.1W savings at a more realistic 35kph speed, which actually means even more – 5 seconds saved every 10km.

Those marginal gains add up when you are out on the road longer.

All-new race-ready geometry

2025 Lapierre Pulsium carbon endurance road bike, group ride

With more of a focus on speed, Lapierre also fine-tuned endurance geometry for a “sportier” feel, while keeping it “accessible to all amateur cyclists”.

2025 Lapierre Pulsium carbon endurance road bike, updated geometry

The biggest shift was to decrease Stack between 9-19mm for riders looking for a lower, more aero fit on the bike. Plus, slightly longer Reach on the smaller sizes to limit toe overlap with big tires and improve stability. So, Stack:Reach ratios are a bit more aggressive but still in a neutral range. And nowhere close to their full-on Xelius DRS, SL3 & Aircode race bike family.

The new Pulsium also flattens its toptubes a bit and features a 1/2° steeper seattube. Plus, Lapierre also adds a sixth new XXL size for taller riders, too.

3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale aero carbon gravel bike gets integrated, finally free of toptube cable routing

Highlighting their new painted-in-Italy WPNT colors inspired by classic car paintjobs, 3T almost glossed over a really big update to their core RaceMax gravel bike… an Integrale shift finally gives the bike fully internal cable routing. Sure, 3T already adopted fully internal routing on their aero road bike a couple of years ago, and then incrementally on each of their premium made-in-Italy Italia models since. But now, the more affordable standard 3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale drops the annoying toptube routing port. And it’s also available as a frameset for 1/2 the cost of the Italia edition!

3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale carbon gravel bike is integrated!

3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale aero carbon gravel bike gets integrated, new colors
(Photos/3T)

For four years, the 3T RaceMax has been 3T’s best-selling gravel bike – aerodynamic, versatile with faster and wide 700c tires or even wider 650b tires for bigger adventures, and plenty of mounts for bikepacking and adventure. Now, 3T gives the RaceMax a “fresh coat of paint” by adding it to their new WPNT program, with 5 special edition metallic & iridescent colors said to be inspired by classic cars. That “We Paint” label meaning that 3T paints the bikes themselves in Italy, letting them run more special edition colors.

3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale aero carbon gravel bike gets integrated, clean cockpit

At the same time, the 3T RaceMax WPNT also becomes “Integrale” like their top-tier made-in-Italy Italia edition carbon road & gravel bikes…

Why does an integrated gravel bike update matter?

2020 3T Exploro RaceMax aero gravel bike, aerodynamic carbon gravel bike review, Exploro Race GRX 2x complete
(Photos/Cory Benson)

The 3T Exploro has been around as an aero gravel bike since 2016. And, I’ve ridden every generation since – at least 5 or 6 different Exploros with one inelegant cable routing solution. The RaceMax platform itself, has been around for 4 years, now. I reviewed this latest bike back in the summer of 2020. And all-in-all I think it’s still one of the best, most versatile but still race-ready gravel bikes out there. Well, except for one major nit I had to pick…

2020 3T Exploro RaceMax aero gravel bike, aerodynamic carbon gravel bike review, Exploro Race GRX 2x complete
2020 Exploro RaceMax’s worst feature (Photo/Cory Benson)

The cable routing into the frame just behind the headset was simply bad. Always in the way, whether mounting devices over the stem or using any toptube bag. It was annoying enough that I wasn’t bothered when it was time to return that test bike to 3T.

2023 3T Exploro Extrema Italia First Rides Review, new carbon 29er XC 29x2.25" MTB tire aero adventure bikepacking gravel bike, top tube bag mount
2023 3T Exploro Extrema Italia solved the internal routing problem, but was expensive (Photo/Cory Benson)

And I was genuinely psyched when I first rode the made-in-Italy Exploro Extrema Italia which fixed the internal cable routing issue (even if the toptube bolts didn’t exactly seem to be in the correct spot).

Sure, it meant that the new made-in-Italy bikes were only compatible with electronic shift drivetrains. And they were a lot more expensive. But, it was so much better a solution that this was a gravel bike I would like to keep around for a bit longer.

3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale aero carbon gravel bike gets integrated, We Paint frames on a rack
(Photo/3T)

Now, that’s no longer holding it back, I can say this made-in-Taiwan RaceMax is one of the best all-rounder gravel bikes out there. It does everything the RaceMax Italia does – the same shaping, tire sizes, component standards, and geometry – just with a frameset that costs half as much built with pre-preg carbon instead of filament winding.

2025 3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale – Pricing, options & availability

The newly integrated RaceMax WPNT is now available directly from 3T in 5 special edition paint colors: Camo gray, Indaco blue, Mara blue, Malva purple & Avorio off-white. And it is offered both as a 2975€ frameset, or a complete bike build for 6150€ with a new GRX Di2 2x build and aero carbon 3T Discus 40/30 wheels. Either way featuring the 3T Fango RaceMax Integrale compact crown fork & Apto Integrale Stealth stem to route all cables (electronic shift only) through the headet.

Both new iterations of the new 3T RaceMax WPNT Integrale are painted and built-to-order, with a 6-8 week lead time.
