Colorado bicycle adventure specialists, Rodeo Labs, just released a new addition to their super-versatile Flaanimal line. Today we meet the new Flaanimal 6 Ti, and it’s ready for whatever you want to throw at it. Don’t forget, the Flaanimal won the 2021 Tour Divide, so yeah, the platform is a goer.

I’m kinda excited about this one, so let’s get right to it.

Flaanimal 6 Ti Frame Features

Headtube

Rodeo Labs loves its new headtube on this frame, saying that it “sets the tone for the overall design philosophy”. It uses 44mm press-in headset cups, is machined out of titanium into an hourglass shape, and supports integrated routing. Rodeo Labs won’t promise that it’s aero, but the fact that it looks more aero is a-ok with them.

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti seat cluster

Distinctive Silhouette

The 6 Ti has some frame features that help it stand out on its own. It uses a custom-profiled, full-length top tube, that has an elegant taper as it gets to the seat tube. It then “hugs” the seat tube for a clean blended seat tube cluster, with nicely sculpted seat stays.

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti KEG BB

Keg Bottom Bracket

Rodeo Labs calls the 6 Ti’s improved T47 bottom bracket shell, The Keg. It kinda looks like a keg, with its increased diameter compared to the standard-size bearing seat. This CNC-machined titanium BB shell is designed to create space for internal routing while not interfering with the crankset spindle. Plus it uses a “bowtie-shaped passthrough” to aid in dropper routing.

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti bottom braket

No Yoke

Unlike the Flaanimal 5 Ti, the 6 Ti doesn’t feature a CNC-machined dropped yoke design. Rodeo Labs decided to keep a more “classicly-shaped chainstay cluster”. They incorporated a 3d printed “no-yoke” design, with seamless tube shaping, expert hand finishing, and fully internal shift/brake routing.

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti rear dropouts

Lock Jaw 2

Moving on from the Flaanimal 5 slider dropout system, Rodeo Labs created a new slider for the 6 Ti. With the invention of the UDH, it was time to design an updated and improved slider. The 6 Ti slider removes unwanted mass as well as makes it ready for new rear derailleur tech. The Lock-Jaw 2 pulls inspiration from the pioneering slider concepts of the TD4. Some of the features of the new Lock-Jaw 2 are:

  • Native UDH Compatibility
  • Standard hanger Compatibility
  • Singlespeed Compatibility
  • 30mm of slider range
  • Future Proof

Routing Choices

If you read some of the comments on Bikerumor, you’ll see that integrated routing is not for everyone. So, with that in mind, Rodeo Labs made sure that the new 6 Ti had three choices for cable/hose routing. They are fully integrated, semi-integrated, and traditional routing.

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti curved stays

Tire Clearance

The Flaanimal 5 Ti could just fit a 29 x 2.1″ which is commendable in the tire clearance dept. With the 6 Ti’s removal of the dropped yoke, the redesigned sliders, and the re-shaped stays, it can comfortably match the 5 Ti’s tire clearance. The new 6 Ti frame, with the sliders in the very rear position, can fit a 29 x 2.1″, and a 650b x 2.4″ with no need for a “wide” crankset. Depending on your tire casing choice and rim selection, you may be able to push that a bit.

Dynamo Ports for the Win

This feature is for all of you commuters, ultra-racers, or anyone who enjoys the worry-free lighting experience that a dynamo system offers. The new 6 Ti frame includes two non-drive side seat stay ports with the upper port near the set tube cluster The lower port is down by the rear drop out. There is a similar port up under the top tube.

The Flaanimal 6 Ti Geometry

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti frameset

The 6 Ti has two geometry options for riders with different fit priorities. Rodeo Labs are calling them Standard Geometry and Extended Geometry. They said, “We will allow people to order either version of the geometry, and we will keep an eye on what is popular ongoing”.

Standard Geo

Our standard geometry is the Flaanimal geometry that everyone who owns one knows and loves. The geometry is largely shared across every bike we make and has proven itself versatile and predictable across genres. This is true quiver-killer geometry, ideal for using the bike from road to gravel, to fast-paced ultra riding.

Extended Geo

Our extended geometry is a new option and increases the stack on each frame size for a more upright riding position. We also slackened the head tube angle slightly for more relaxed handling. The handling changes will be very subtle on this version but are more suited for a rider who is touring or riding ultra-distance events with their bike.

I Built my Own 6 Ti For a Price

Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 6 Ti green full bike
Not my virtual build

Being that the new Flaanimal 6 Ti has so many choices to choose from there is no basic retail price for the frameset (that I could see on their site). So, I thought it would be fun to “build my own” and see what I would spend.

You can build yours here.

I kept it simple and tried to keep from choosing all of the options in an attempt to keep the price reasonable. Here’s what I picked…

  • Frame size: 58cm
  • Geometry choice: Extended
  • Build choice: Shimano GRX 820 1x
  • Add-ons: Dynamo Hub and headlight
  • Price: $8,185.20

David Folch, the 6’6″ tall CEO and Founder of the DirtySixer bicycle brand, was tired of riding disproportionate 700c and 29er bicycles. He learned how to design and fabricate “better, bigger, and safer” bicycles for tall people. And, he swore to make it look great as well. Now, he is Introducing the DirtySixer 32er Gravel.

This 32er Gravel is designed as a planned evolution of their 36″ wheeled bike named the Allroad. The Allroad is a bike made especially for tall riders, and has been in production for a little over a decade. The 32er will be aimed towards riders that are slightly smaller with a projected fit range of 5’10” to 6’8″. Bigger than that, David recommends the 36″ Allroad.

(Photos / DirtySixer)

After making prototypes around 7 years ago using unicycle rims and tires, DirtySixer now makes their own wheels and tires. However, there are more choices for those items now, even 32er carbon forks.

DirtySixer 32er Gravel bike front end

Hoping to fill the gap between the 29er and the monstrous 36er, the 32er seems to fit where it needs to for the taller rider. It uses a 6061 aluminum frame, with designs and component choices made for the tall and sometimes heavier rider.

32er Gravel Retail and Specs

The 32er will rollin custom DirtySixer VeeTire T-Monster 32 x 2.4″ tires. Those tires are mounted to their own double-wall aluminum rims with a 35mm internal width, or a carbon option with a 30mm internal width. Notably, this bike uses fat bike hub standards with a 150 x 15mm up front and 197 x 12mm out back. A 1×12 SRAM Apex Eagle drivetrain propels the rider while the (most likely long) crankset is TBA. While the seat post is a standard 31.6mm affair, the seat post clamp is an extra burly twin bolt design to keep the post from slipping under large riders.

Retail: $5,899 (30% off if you become a VIP member for $4,129)

  • Frame: DirtySixer 6061 or titanium available in XL, 2XL, 3XL (should fit riders from 5’10” to 6’8″)
  • Fork: carbon fiber 150mm OLD x 15mm with triple eyelets

  • Brakes: 200mm rotors and hydraulic calipers
  • Shifter: SRAM Apex Eagle
  • Seatpost: 31.6mm zero setback
  • Stem: 50mm + 30°

Crowdfunding Details

DirtySixer will soon launch a crowdfunding campaign for the 32er. Currently, you can land ‘VIP membership’ with a non-refundable $100 deposit. That gains you access to the VIP price when the crowdfunding campaign starts, which should work out to 30% off. We’re told that the preorder window will close in December.

Campaign timeline:

  • October / November: Testing
  • December / January: Finalizing geometry and components
  • March / April: Production
  • June: Delivery

DirtySixer says that some things, like drivetrain and brakes, may change once the feedback returns from testers.

Other Big Bikes in the Works

David also tells us that there are some mountain bikes in the works, starting with a hardtail 32er. That will likely be followed by a full suspension MTB that’s in development with “one of the biggest names in the rear suspension world.” On top of that, there are loose plans to offer 32″ wheel sets which could be an alternative build for existing 29+ or fat bikes.

Wisconsin’s Trek Bicycles released a new eBike earlier this week, and it’s ready to conquer urban life. Meet the new FX+7 City eBike. The FX+7 is a high-end, lightweight, city eBike that is “light enough to carry up stairs and powerful enough to fly up climbs.”

Let’s see…

The Trek FX+7

Trek Bikes FX+7 City eBike carrying handle
Lightweight, with a handle to carry it!

Claiming to weigh in at 40 lbs, the FX+7 could be heaven for the right commuter. It comes equipped with everything you may need on a bike like this. For instance, it comes complete with a rear rack that fits both MIK rear and side panniers, front and rear lights, and full coverage fenders.

Trek Bikes FX+7 City eBike in the black

The riding position is what Trek is calling “active”, which looks to me like an upright position, but with a slightly more aggressive posture. The FX+7 is equipped with a compact TQ HPR50 motor that delivers 50Nm of power.

Trek Bikes FX+7 City eBike in the city

With the stealthy, integrated 360Wh battery you get a claimed range of up to 50 miles and up to 75 miles with the optional 160Wh range extender. It boasts an assisted top speed of 28 mph and has a battery size of 360Wh.

Smart Phone Integration

Trek Bikes FX+7 City eBike integrated cockpit

Kinda buried in the specs is the fact that the FX+7 also offers true smartphone integration. It’s about time that ebikes offered the option of charging your phone as you ride, while using it for navigation, and that’s exactly what the FX+7 provides. Thanks to the Quad Lock wireless charging mount on the integrated handlebar and stem, you can seamlessly mount and charge your phone while riding. Trek doesn’t go into detail, but based off the specs of other Quad Lock charging mounts, it should be compatible with Apple and Android devices that are wireless charging compatible.

Riders can also connect to the Trek Central app to customize assist levels, get turn-by-turn directions, estimate range, plus much more. This means you can use your phone as the ebike display screen, but it’s completely optional since there is also a small display screen on the top tube.

Trek Bikes FX+7 City eBike Shimano CUES

The drivetrain on the Trek FX+7 is the durable and reliable Shimano CUES with Linkglide technology. This drivetrain offers smoother shifting, made for eBikes. Plus, it is very durable, offering longer life and less visits to the bike shop.

There are plenty of options for carrying extra gear on your bike these days. But if you have accessory mounts on the side of your fork legs (or not), you may be wondering what to use to put those mounts in use. Well, something like the Ortlieb Fork Pack would do the trick.

(Photos / R. Frazelle)

I finally installed them on the Jamis Renegade C3 I’m reviewing at the moment. I don’t have any bikepacking trips planned, as it’s getting really cold where I live. So, I will mostly be packing them up for some #coffeeoutside adventures, as well as packing some mid-ride lunch/snacks and packing along some layers. I will have more pics of that craziness later, in the full review.

Let’s get to my first impressions.

The 4.1L Ortlieb Fork Pack

Ortlieb Fork Pack First look Review what it came with
What’s included with the Ortlieb Fork Pack

The Ortlieb Fork pack comes in two sizes, the 5.8L and the 4.1L (tested). They also come in two colors, Black Matte, and Dark Sand (tested). The 4.1-liter packs are super lightweight at 290g (315g for the 5.8L) with the adaptor.

Ortlieb Fork Pack First look Review attaching point

With Ortlieb’s Quick-Lock S (QLS) adapter, they can be taken on or off your bike in seconds. They mount like a small pannier but without the need for a front rack.

I love that they provide 8.2 liters (combined) of 100% waterproof storage on the bike. They can be mounted on any fork with accessory mounts on the legs with the supplied adaptor as long as the legs are untapered and between 30 and 42mm. The Fork pack can also be mounted to any tube within those diameters using the included adapter for round tubes without integrated mounts.

Ortlieb Fork Pack First look Review pack open

They use the tried and trued roll-top closure and are constructed using PVC-free nylon fabric that is sustainably produced in Germany. With the included QLS adapter, you can flip a lever and attach and detach the Fork Pack in seconds.

The Fork Pack has two large front and rear reflective triangles and a reflective logo on the side.

  • Depth: 11cm (4.3″)

  • Weight: 290g
  • Width: 17.5cm (6.9″)

Fork Pack Installation

The installation of the Fork Pack using the fork mounts went easy and without issue. The directions were clear and concise, with pictures. They arrived with all of the pieces needed to complete the installation.

For my application on the Jamis Renegade C3, which has a carbon fork, I used the included Carbon Fiber Protective Inserts. They provide a “buffer” between the fork and the QLS adapter when securing it to the fork. To use the Carbon Fiber Protective Inserts, just insert them in the designated spots behind the adapter, hold them to the fork, and install the included screws.

Once the adapters are installed, just slide the two bottom tongues into the bottom slots until you hear a “click”. And there you have it, the packs are installed. To remove the Packs, simply press on the lever and pull down. Boom, it’s that easy.

First Impressions

First impressions indicate that this pack system is easy to install and is high quality. The packs themselves are sturdy and well-built like we’ve come to expect from Ortlieb. I think the size choices are good for something that attaches to the fork of a bicycle. That being said, I don’t think I would like the 5.8-liter size. The 4.1-liter size seems the perfect size for my usage.

Ortlieb Fork Pack First look Review front shot

I’ve ridden them loaded and empty on a handful of rides, I like how small-ish they are. They are light and so easy to take on and off of the Renegade. They are surprisingly quiet, even on the rough stuff. Very impressed so far.

The price is spot-on for a fully waterproof, high-quality bag that happens to come with a very clever mounting adapter. There is a very good chance that these Packs will last a very long time, and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a fork pack.

The “Select” program is designed to offer customers the best Stinner has to offer while “eliminating the wait time and potential confusion that’s often associated with a custom bike”. The dedicated, in-house production and manufacturing line will allow Stinner’s full custom side to continue to flourish, with “Select” bikes remaining in stock all year long.

Minnesota machining Masters, Wolf Tooth Components (WTC), have added four fun colors to the Morse Cargo Cage line. The Morse Cargo Cage is unique in that it carries the same dot-dash mounting system as WTC’s uber-popular Morse Cage. This system allows for many mounting options for the user.

Now along with Black, the new colors added to the line are Olive, Espresso, Raw Silver, and Gold (for that extra cargo bling).

The Morse Cargo Cage is designed to increase the ability to bring stuff on your bicycle. This makes the cage ideal for bikepacking, sef-supported racing, coffee outside gear, or any time you need more space on your ride.

It can fit fork bags, fat Nalgene bottles, or even a stout and tasty burrito. You can buy these versatile cages by themselves, or you can add a pair of WTC’s new Cargo Straps to help secure said burrito to the cage. The Cargo Straps are sold separately as well.

The Morse Cargo Cage fits perfectly on a fork with three-pack mounting. Not to mention, it will also fit anywhere there are bottle bosses. There are convenient bolt mounting points on the angled sides of the cage for added versatility.

This is especially helpful on forks that have bottle bosses on the front or the back. In this scenario, you may be able to mount two cages on one fork leg.

The Morse Cargo Cages are made in Minnesota, USA from durable and corrosion-resistant 5052 aluminum.

Last month, Cory wrote a piece on the “2-Watt saving” Aero computer mount made by California’s Nano Worx. Nano Worx is at it again with a new product. But this time there will be no watt savings. Introducing their new Nano Worx Hook Lever Multi-Tool – it’s compact, lightweight, and very clever.

(Photo / Nano Worx)

The Nano Worx Hook Lever Multi-Tool integrates a tire lever with three cleverly stowed tool bits in the handle. The bits are slid into the handle, one on top of the other. Once they are inside the handle the included o-ring is stretched around it to secure the tool bits.

The tool uses an integrated magnet that holds the bits in place while in use and keeps them quiet when stowed. The Nano Worx Hook Lever Multi-Tool looks great for the rider who needs to free up space and lighten up a saddle bag.

Buyer’s Choice…

Offering the three “buyer’s choice” bits is a unique way for the rider to stow only the tools used the most. The choices are three of the following: M6, M5, M4, M3, or a T25. With a combo of an M6 (highly recommended for axle removal), M5, and the T25 you can make simple adjustments to your steed. Add the integrated tire lever and you have what you need for a trailside flat repair.

German-made bicycle company Sour Bikes has a new all-road bicycle model. It’s been in the works for a long time. After four years in the “planning hopper”, taking their time to “do it right, and do it our way”, the new Sour Space Cake is finally here.

(Photos / Sour Bikes)

Sour felt that there was a significant gap in their bike offerings. A road-plus bike was the thing to fill the gap. They set out to design something fast and efficient, but something that could “get weird when the road turns rough”.

Space Cake to Tackle the “Paved” Roads

Sour bikes Space Cake All-Road Bike cockpit

After countless prototypes and test rides, the Space Cake is here and Sour says it’s the most “road” bike they’ve ever made. The geo is tuned for long road days and adds durability. The tubing and frame parts are designed to be as light and efficient as possible.

Gone are the road bikes of yesterday. No more ultra-skinny, high-pressure tires on a “one-trick-pony”, road bike. This all-road bike is built for when the paved road fades into a gravel road and you want to take the long way home.

Sour bikes Space Cake All-Road Bike carbon fork

Sour says the Space Cake is light, responsive, and built for speed. Like all of the Sour bike models, the Space Cake comes with its signature, custom powder coating. Choose from bold, classy, or a little off-beat.

Mountain biking is at the core of Sour Bikes’ DNA, but they say all-road and gravel are at the heart of Sour’s off-MTB-season. As such, a bike like the Space Cake can be the perfect off-season tool even if you prefer knobby tires and full suspension.

Today on Instagram, with the caption “Should we make this?”, Trek Bicycles teased a possible new full-suspension mountain bike. They’re calling it the PipeDream. The IG post continues by saying that the bike was designed by Trek’s Industrial Designer, Kyle Neuser, and “crafted by Trek’s prototype lab.”

According to the post, the geo is borrowed from the new Top Fuel, as well as the rear end and rocker link.

The Instagram post mentions that it was Kyle’s vision to “combine the natural damping of steel with the proven geo and pedaling performance of the new Top Fuel”.

Steel is Still Real

Trek Prototype PipeDream Steel Full Sus bolt-on shock mount

The PipeDram is running bolt-on aluminum shock mounts that allow for future suspension tuning. It’s also nice to see some exposed cable routing on the classic skinny steel tubes.

The paint scheme on the PipeDream is meant to reflect the colorways of the steel Trek bikes of the 80s and 90s – their attempt to remind everyone that steel can still meet the demands that today’s trails dish out.

Trek Prototype PipeDream Steel Full Sus external routing

This “prototype” checks a lot of boxes. It is both modern and retro, and very good-looking. This is not the first nor the last bike company to make a kick-ass steel full-suspension MTB, but it’s rare to see something along these lines from one of the manufacturing giants.

Yay, or Nay?

For more on this bike, or to give a Trek a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the PipeDream. Let them know if they should move forward with production, check out their Instagram account.
